Paul Merson has said that if it were Jose Mourinho who had celebrated the way Jurgen Klopp did, the punishment from the FA would be far more severe.The Liverpool manager could not contain his emotions following a stoppage-time winner from substitute Divock Origi against Everton in Sunday’s Merseyside derby and sprinted on to the pitch to embrace goalkeeper Alisson.2

Despite apologising to Marco Silva and insisting he meant no disrespect, Klopp was subsequently charged by the FA for his actions.However, Sky Sports pundit Merson feels the consequences would have differed had it been the Manchester United boss.“It’d be a 25-game ban – I dread to think,” he toldThe Debate. “Put it this way, if that was Jose, he’d have got sent straight to the stands as soon as he got back to his technical area.“Jose got sent off at Southampton for going outside his technical area. It’s horses for courses – everyone loves Jurgen Klopp, apart from Manchester United fans.“It’s one of them where it’s a case of ‘don’t do it again’ – no-one got hurt and Marco Silva was fine with it.”2

Klopp has received support from another of his fellow managers, including Manchester City bossPep Guardiola who said the reaction was “understandable”, and that he and his adversaries have “a lot of emotions in those moments”.Former West Bromwich Albion defender Jonas Olsson, however, was far from impressed.He said: If Id been an Everton player, Id have knocked him down, I think.You cant do that when a player has made such a mistake it is so disrespectful.I think Klopp is really fun, but I do not think it this time.
